Le Golf National de France: this year’s French Open course is open to the public

golfnational1 Le Golf National de France: this years French Open course is open to the publicLocated 20 miles west of Paris, near the Palace of Versailles, you will find the 45 hole public golf complex of the Le Golf National de France. Built in 1990 to be the permenant home of the French Open, the Albatross Stadium course is built in the “stadium links” style and is probably the toughest test of golf in the Ile de France region.

Le Golf National began hosting the French Open (one of the oldest golf tournaments in the world) in 1991 and has been the host venue ever since. With such recognition, the Albatross course has since been voted the 4th best course in Europe. For a true appreciation of what golf in France has to offer, this course is well worth a visit on your Paris vacation.

Designer Hubert Chesneau set out to create a course in the American TPC mould, which meant choosing a site on clay to achieve maximum sculpting of the layout. The result is an inland links style course with gently rolling fairways, heavily undulated greens and plenty of water hazards.

golfnational21 Le Golf National de France: this years French Open course is open to the publicThere is definitely a general theme of risk-reward which makes for a very entertaining and challenging round of golf. A good example of this is the 15th hole, where a tee shot aimed away from the water on the right hand side can result in a 3-4 club difference for the second shot, which to an island green can make the approach vastly more difficult.

Although it is long (over 7000 yards from the back tees), the fairways are wide and generous. Heavy penal rough, vast water hazards and huge bunkers will keep you focusing on the short grass.

For a course that is consistently in great condition, it is excellent value for money (60 euros during the week). The facilities at the complex are first class. In addition to 36 holes of championship golf, there is a 9 hole par 32 which provides the perfect warm up or 2 hour round. Accomodation is available at the Novotel hotel (which is part of the complex) and play and stay packages are available.

novotel Le Golf National de France: this years French Open course is open to the publicIf you are thinking of a golf vacation or a weekend break to Paris, you would be surprised to learn of the superb quality of the golf courses surrounding the city. This year’s French Open is held between July 1st – 4th, so a visit around this time would ensure you play it the way it is set up for the best players in the world.

English pair lead the way at Augusta

Two English players have set the pace at this year’s Masters. Both are seeking their first major win and neither have held the lead or co-lead after any round of a major.

Lee Westwood and Ian Poulter finished round 2 at eight under, two shots clear of Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, KJ Choi, Ricky Barnes and Anthony Kim, with YE Yang a further shot back.

Yesterday, easy pins and calm conditions meant that we saw veterens Fred Couples (50) and Tom Watson (60) at the top of the leaderboard.

‘Today’s golf course was very different from yesterday”, commented Tiger Woods. Trickier pin placements, longer tees, faster greens and stronger winds made scoring conditions a lot tougher.

Today required a lot more patience and shot making, and that’s exactly what we saw from Westwood (world number 4) who picked up 4 shots (with an eagle on the 2nd) in his first 7 holes. Had it not been for an eratic drive on the 14th and a resulting double bogey, he would have surely held the two round lead on his own.

westwood 300x273 English pair lead the way at Augusta

“It was a grinding day, danger lurks everywhere and you have to keep your wits about you,” said Westwood.

Westwood has had his fair share of near misses in majors, finishing third in both the Open Championship and USPGA last year. Consistently one of the best players in Europe, he certainly has the game to win.

He said, “Obviously it would mean a lot to win a major championship. I’ve come close over the last couple of years, three third-place finishes and I know I’ve got the game and I know I’ve got the temperament. It’s just going that one step further and finishing.”

The ever-confident Poulter (world number 7), who by winning the World Matchplay Championship has won already on US soil this year, says that his second round was one of the best he’s played in a while. His second sucessive 68 has given him a great chance of his maiden major victory.

poulty 300x208 English pair lead the way at Augusta

“To be playing Augusta was in my dreams, and to be sitting at the top of the leaderboards was in my dreams, as well. So hopefully we can have a good weekend and be in a similar situation come Sunday night.”

The last Brit to win a major was Paul Lawrie in 1999, who capitalized on Jean Van de Velde’s collapse at Carnoustie. With such an abundance of talent in the British Isles, it has been a long eleven years. Both Poulter and Westwood have the experience and game to win a major, and being friends it might help that they are paired together on Saturday.

With so many great players within a few shots of the lead, it is set up for a fantastic weekend of golf. Who knows which Augusta we get tomorrow, but if Tiger is still on the leaderboard come tomorrow evening, there’s a very strong chance of him picking up major number 15 and have the press talking about his golf instead of his personal life.

Why most golf practice is a complete waste of time

Many of you will be setting a season-long goal of getting your handicap down or breaking your best score, and with that in mind, you will no doubt be spending a lot of time on the driving range.

driving rangeBut unfortunately, for most of us, the many hours spent practicing, is simply put, A COMPLETE WASTE OF TIME. As each year passes, how many of you feel like you are a better player, but this isn’t reflected in your scores? This is because your practice is not as effective as it should be.

The golf industry has a tendency to want to fill our heads with thousands of tips that will quickly transform our games. Pick up any golf magazine and you will find endless technical drills and training aids available, which will (supposedly) quickly shave strokes off your handicap. But this is not what they achieve. Instead, they create a golfer full of doubt and fear, resulting in poor golf scores and frustrating rounds. With such self induced over-complication of the golf swing, there is so much that go wrong. And most golfers practice and play in fear of it doing so. This is obviously not the way golf is intended to be played and is not why you devote so much of your leisure time to it.

My advice to you for the new golf season is this: stop looking for the quick fix and breaking your golf swing down to a million moving parts. The most important factor in playing better golf and reaching your true potential is learning to trust your swing. Building confidence in what you have is far more important than trying every possible swing drill. Perfect the fundamentals, yes, but make your practice about experimentation and learning to synchronize your body and mind with one clear goal.

When you are on the driving range, start to become aware of how shots feel (try to hit as many different shots as possible). See the shots you want to hit, and then feel what your body needs to do to execute them. Try not to consciously think about what your body is doing, just feel it. Honing your senses of visualization, feel and building a trust in your body to execute golf shots is the most effective way to improve. Quit the technical over analysis and start to play sensory golf.

Continuously learning new techniques completely disconnects you from visualizing and feeling good golf shots. What will help you most on the golf course, is believing you can hit the shot you can see in your mind, not the quirky swing tip you picked up from this month’s golf magazine. When we practice in the right way, we ingrain good golf shots in our minds and with a good shot routine, we can find them anywhere on the golf course. As Bobby Jones once said, “the golf swing is too complex a movement to be consciously controlled”.

Make golf a simple and enjoyable game of visualization, feel and trust and you will learn quickly how you can reach your true potential. Why not set yourself this goal for this season: To have at least one round of golf where you don’t think about anything technical. You see the shot, the target and just hit it there! Golf is a game of confidence and this is exactly what you will achieve when you change the way you practice.

John Daly reacts to the Tiger Woods Statement

woodsdaly1 300x234 John Daly reacts to the Tiger Woods StatementIf anyone knows what it’s like to face intense media scrutiny, it’s John Daly. The Memphis based golfer recently made his reaction to the Tiger Woods Media Statement public, saying that Tiger handled it poorly and shouldn’t have waited the three months it took for him to face the public. He believes it gave the media and speculators too much time to write “bad things” and spread rumors.

Daly, whose antics over the years have given the press plenty of fodder for jaw-dropping stories, knows very well how punishing they can be. He certainly has more experience than Tiger in dealing with the negative attention drawn from of his bad behavior, and says that if he makes a mistake he’ll admit it right away and face the consequences.

John DalyJD, a British Open winner who grew up honing his game at Arkansas Golf Courses, never really conformed to the clean cut persona of the professional tournament golfer. And he never tried to. His attitude on the course is just as cavalier as in his personal life, and his exciting, aggressive play reflects that. John Daly is who he is, and although some would say he could have achieved a lot more in the game, it is debatable whether he would be a two time major champion without playing golf in the same way he lives his life. He brings a sense of humanity and humility to the game. Whether it’s down-right brilliance or cringing self destructive behavior, you have to admit that there is rarely a dull moment when he is on the golf course.

He could obviously benefit from more self-restraint, but golf needs characters like him. In a sport where most players fit the mold of the classic all-American, Daly plays with his heart on his sleeve and it’s awesome to watch. It would be great for golf to see him back playing regularly on the PGA Tour and competing in majors again.

Golf needs Tiger for a different reason. Although he is no longer the perfect role model for young kids, he is the greatest to have ever played the game and he has made the sport more popular than ever. Golf is not just a game, it has so many other benefits for personal and sociological development that it is amazing what positive exposure he has given the sport.

Being Tiger Woods and one of the world’s most respected sportsman gives him a huge responsibility to act with integrity at all times, which he has now failed in doing. He is, and will continue to pay for the huge magnitude of his mistake(s), but the game needs him back on the course doing what he does best. The sport is simply a lot more popular when he plays and he raises the bar for all his fellow competitors.

What is now most interesting, is whether the golfer attributed with having the best mental game of them all, will have the mental tenacity to overcome all the negative attention and get back to playing his best golf. As Tiger said in his statement, “It’s not what you achieve in life, it’s what you overcome”.

Try spot putting for the best way to putt

Here’s a quick mental game tip for more consistent putting.

The best putters in the world are “spot” putters.

strickerputting Try spot putting for the best way to puttThis means that (after reading the break on the putt) the focus is on the direction you want to the ball to travel in the first 2-3 feet of the putt. You pick a spot that you want the ball to roll over in this range and then focus on executing this. This spot can be a discolored piece of grass, a spike mark or anything that gives you a target to aim at within 2-3 feet, the closer to the ball the better. This achieves the following objective which is key for good putting. Firstly you are not concentrating on the hole, so you are less likely to come out of your posture prematurely and look at the ball’s final target, which causes miss-hit putts. Staying over the ball until the ball has been hit will improve your ball striking leading to more consistent putts. You achieve a much more consistent “roll” on the ball, which is the most important factor in good putting. Not “trying” to make putts, but instead hitting a solid putt to an intermediary target will make you a much better putter. Try it!!!

Would be great to hear how you get on with this new thinking.

I have also written the following articles on putting:

Routine and Commitment will make you a better putter

Some great advice from Tiger (…on golf)

Here’s some great advice from the the greatest player to have ever played the game. Remember this the next time you are practicing hard to simulate the “perfect” golf swing. The best thing we can do to reach our potential in golf is to trust our instincts, work on the fundamentals and learn to play with visualization and feel.

Beat the winter blues and take a golf trip to the historic city of Lisbon

Is winter dragging on too long? Dying to get the clubs out and hit the links? Enjoy traveling and want to experience a new culture? Then you should consider a golf trip to to Portugal. Portugal is one of Europe’s best golf destinations. With hundreds of courses spread throughout a fascinating country, it is not hard to find a resort or city that will provide you with a rich cultural visit and an amazing golf experience.

Golfers typically think of the Algarve when they think about Golf in Portugal. But if you want to really get beneath the surface and discover Portuguese culture and still get to play some phenomenal golf courses, then Lisbon is the perfect place.

With springtime temperatures whilst most of Europe is experiencing winter, the Costa de Lisboa has natural beauty, rich architecture and some of Europe’s best golf courses. There are over 20 courses surrounding Lisbon and most of them are better value and quieter than those on the Algarve.

penha Beat the winter blues and take a golf trip to the historic city of LisbonPenha Longa Golf Course is located in the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park and is ranked among the top 30 courses in Europe. It is a first class golf facility boasting 36 holes of championship golf and a splendid five star hotel and spa. The Atlantic Course is a par 72, measures 6,290 meters and was designed by Robert Trent Jones jr. The layout is extremely challenging and provides breathtaking views of the ocean with Estoril and Cascais to the South and the Sintra hills to the North. Pehna is the current host of the Portuguese Open and at 70 EUR per round, it is a “must play” course.

estoril2 Beat the winter blues and take a golf trip to the historic city of LisbonThe Estoril Championship Golf Course is situated 25 minutes away from Lisbon and is the oldest golf course in Portugal. Designed by MacKenzie Ross in 1936, its fairways overlook the town of Estoril and the Atlantic Ocean. It is set amongst Eucalyptus, Pine and Mimosa trees and measures 5262 meters. Although the course is short, the heavily contoured fairways and elevation changes make it a test of accuracy not distance. Strategic thinking and respect for the course will give you the best chance of a good score here. It is no surprise why it has hosted the Portuguese Open 20 times.

A great place to stay whilst visiting this area is Cascais. This once tiny fishing village has turned into an elegant beach town without losing its charm. This a great place to absorb the best of Portuguese culture. Portuguese food is fresh and healthy and in Cascais you will find an abundance of quality seafood restaurants. Try langostinos, fresh fish, ceviche, fine local wines and vintage ports. You can also visit the boutiques and markets where you will find great value high-end fashion and local art. Be sure to pay a visit to the ancient town of Sintra where you can take a horse drawn carriage tour through the medieval streets and take in the several castles and palaces.

For championship golf, a relaxing break and an intense cultural experience you have to visit this area of Portugal.

A drill to simulate pressure on the golf course and increase feel

Here’s a mental game drill to try on the putting green which will help to simulate the pressure of being on the golf course, which is always the best way to practice. Some PGA Tour players actually run fast on the spot before hitting balls to increase their heart rate so they feel like they are in competition. I’m not suggesting you try that, but learning how to get yourself in the zone and getting used to the feeling of pressure will help you develop confidence and you will score better.

A great video tip for increasing feel for long putts and scoring better

PGA Pro Charlie King gives us some great insight into how to practice better feel for long putts. Putting is all about visualization and feel. If you are not developing these skills when you are working on your putting, you are not practicing in the most effective way. These drills will help you enhance your touch and feel for long putts and you will definitely score better as a result.
